Tour De Vardy

5th October 2016

3 Days - 11 Dealerships – 233 Miles – 2 Bikes – A Lot of Energy Drinks

As part of our giving back initiative each dealership supports and raises money for their chosen charity that year. This year, Vauxhall Aberdeen took on a mega cycling challenge in aid of Home-Start Aberdeen.

Richie Cooper (Managing Partner) and Gavin Fairweather (New Car Sales Manager) keen cyclists and not ones to shy away from a challenge were the ones to take on this suitably titled 'Tour De Vardy' cycle challenge. Even with a few sporting challenges under their belts Tour De Vardy was going to be no walk in the park. They set themselves the challenge of cycling to all Eleven Peter Vardy dealerships across Scotland in Three days. Starting in Glasgow at the Hillington CarStore, onto Vauxhall Motherwell, through to Edinburgh to BMW, MINI and Vauxhall cross the bridge to Fife and Dalgety Bay Vauxhall, then along the river to Vauxhall Kirkcaldy up to Vauxhall Perth, back to the water to Dundee and the site for the new CarStore, then up to Aberdeen Porsche Centre, the new Jaguar Land Rover dealership and finishing up at their home dealership, Vauxhall Aberdeen. An estimated 233miles in total!

Day One - And they're off!

87 Miles starting from our Hillington CarStore in Glasgow, under a well placed 'We Hope You Have A Great Journey' sign displayed in their handover bay. The CarStore team gave Richie and Gavin a great send off with energy drinks, donations and even a live video on CarStore news to send the guys on their way. So far so good, for about 30 minutes when while riding through a park and Richie got a flat-tyre. Luckily the support van was nearby and a quick bike swap they were back on their way to Motherwell where new Managing Partner, Ian, welcomed the pair to their first stop. Ms Home-Start Bear said hello to all customers, got a few photos and donations while two technicians fixed the flat tyre (saviours!).

After the quick refreshments break and hello, it was on-to Edinburgh. Following National Cycle Route 75 the cyclists split from the support van and took a scenic track to Livingston where they briefly met the van for a lunch stop before heading out to Edinburgh. Arriving ahead of the Cyclist the support van drivers with Ms Home-Start Bear in tow, made their way round the dealerships, trying out a few MINI's for size and waiting in anticipation for the cyclists. The cyclists arrived and as the day was getting on there was just time for some supportive words, a picture outside each dealership, and onto the bridge to Dalgety Bay before dark.

Day Two - Into the hills.

From Dalgety Bay to Kirckaldy, to Perth, finishing the day in Dundee a total of 6hr 51 minutes ride time, 3190ft elevation and 74miles covered, the route was anything but flat. A slightly 'easier' day today, with less miles and with all Peter Vardy dealerships shut on a Sunday, it was the cyclists with only the support van for company and guiding them through the streets and country roads from site to site. A beautiful day from start to finish, a cool cruise along the fife riverside to Kirkcaldy then into the hills to Perth, Peter Vardys first dealership, and back East to the coast and Dundee, to the construction site of the new Dundee CarStore. There was a big day ahead, with 82miles to cover and an arrival time scheduled for 5pm at Vauxhall Aberdeen, early nights all round.

Day Three - The home straight, the final stretch, the toughest day the guys would face.

With only the thought of getting to the end to get them through Richie and Gavin took the scenic coastal route from Dundee to Aberdeen. Beautiful views for miles, smooth tarmacked tracks and quiet coastal tourist roads for the most part, in others...the steepest hills on the tour. Coming out of Montrose the pair took National Cycle Route 1 to the lunch stop at Inverbervie, mainly flat, but true to form, Scotlands rolling hills threw a steep climb at them that you would struggle to walk up let along cycle. For the third day in a row the weather was on top form and made for a clear sunny cycle home.

Onward to Aberdeen, the cyclists arrive in Aberdeen in style at their first stop for the day, Porsche Centre Aberdeen welcomed with cold water and generous donations, then down the hill to Jaguar Land Rover and a photo with some old colleagues before setting off across the city to Vauxhall Aberdeen where they were welcomed by a giant 66 finishing line, friends, family, the whole dealership, Home-Start colleagues and of course Ms Home-Start Bear was there to welcome them back. Balloons flew to the skies and party poppers were set off upon the arrival. The final stop, Vauxhall Aberdeen.

The gruelling 3 day cycle covered 239.3miles and raised a total of £2915.35 for Home-Start Aberdeen. Throughout the year the dealership has been supporting and raising money for this incredible charity. Home-Start Aberdeen provides support and friendship for vulnerable families across Aberdeen. Other activities that Vauxhall Aberdeen have fund raised with are Bennachie Hill walk and Charity Darts Night, along with clothing donations for their shop on George Street and collecting and wrapping books for the book advent at Christmas.
