Winter Driving Tips

Here at Peter Vardy we have put together a few tips and pieces of useful advice that all drivers should know before they even attempt to go out in the Winter weather.

Before setting out

• Check weather forecast regularly - check for any bad weather that is forecast for the area you are driving - use such websites as www.metoffice.gov.uk andwww.bbc.co.uk/weather
• Know your route and check for any delays or road closures - www.trafficscotland.org is a great source for up to date travel information in Scotland and drivers should check it before setting out
• Keep your tyres in good condition and properly inflated - cold weather reduces tyre pressure, so check and adjust frequently. The best idea would be to put on snow tyres when driving in snow which we have at Peter Vardy - Click here to see our Fantastic offer and video on how snow socks work
• Remove all snow from windows, mirrors, roof, lights and bumper before you leave
• Check all fluids, brakes, lights and wipers before the bad weather comes (Get a winter safety check at Peter Vardy and we will do all this for you)
• Make sure anti freeze is topped up to the correct level
• Make sure you have plenty of fuel before setting out
• Make sure someone knows where you are going and have your mobile phone fully charged in case you get in trouble whilst out

When Driving

• Slow down - a good rule to go by is to slow down your speed by 50% in snowy conditions. You need to remember though not to go too slow as your car needs power to keep going!
• Always leave more distance between you and the car in front than usual so you have more time to slow down
• Keep a light touch on the controls - smooth operation is the best way to keep control in slippery conditions. Prevent the white knuckle grip which can result in loss of control
• Make frequent rest stops - winter driving is very tiring so it is important to take rests, even just for 5 minutes every hour, this will increase your level of alertness
• If you get stuck, stay in your vehicle - stay warm and wait for assistance, making sure your exhaust pipe is clear of any obstructions such as ice or snow
• Avoid using cruise control
• Wear warm clothes
• Drink plenty of water and have some food with you - this will stop you getting dehydrated and keep your energy up
• Stay calm!

Another good idea that all drivers should do is to have a Winter Emergency Safety Kit! This is a good idea in case you get stuck in the snow or even get stranded and have to make your own way to safety or wait on someone coming to get you.
