The 2012 BMW 1 Series
The second generation of the BMW 1-series hatchback has arrived at Peter Vardy Edinburgh. This exciting new car is packed with more technology than ever, including new, super-efficient petrol and diesel engines, and equipment you would usually only expect to see on larger luxury cars. There's also greater scope for personalisation, which can be used to cater to the drivers’ needs. Underneath the skin, it's lighter than its predecessor and is the only car in the small hatchback class to offer rear-wheel drive, so driver satisfaction is a top priority.

All three diesel engines available in the 1-series hatchback use the same 2.0-litre common-rail unit. The base 116d has 115bhp, the mid-range 118d has 143bhp and the range-topping 120d 181bhp. The car is sold exclusively with turbocharged engines, including big-selling 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre common-rail diesel units. The new 1-series also has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

The new 1-series is 85mm longer than its predecessor, its wheelbase has grown by 30mm and the front and rear track have also been widened. There has also been 30 litres capacity added to the boot. In the front, there’s plenty of headroom, shoulder space and legroom, and the pedal and steering wheel positioning is good.
Step inside the BMW 1-series and the cabin certainly ticks the quality box. All the controls are stylish, the dashboard is trimmed in soft-touch plastics and there’s a generous amount of leather. There’s plenty of equipment too. Even entry-level ES models come with aircon and stop-start, while SE versions get a 6.5-inch flatscreen monitor and a Bluetooth hands-free with USB connectivity.

BMW’s Drive Performance Control is standard on all models, this will give you four ‘modes’ to choose from when you test drive the 1-series at Peter Vardy Edinburgh. These include Comfort – the standard setting – and Sport – which sharpens steering, throttle and suspension, while Sport + allows more rear wheel slip. But the most useful is ECO PRO, which helps drivers save fuel, by adjusting throttle response to encourage more eco-minded driving and limiting the use of the air-conditioning, heated mirrors and seats. The increases in fuel economy are displayed on the dashboard, showing how far extra the car can travel as a result. It’s a really clever and easy to use system, which has you driving more economically without even realising it.
