BMW i8
BMW are set to release a series of new electric cars starting with the release of the BMW i8 in 2014. The i8 will be a full of exciting new features such as a new turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor.
Engine and Chassis
The BMW i8 is known as ‘an icon of progress’. It offers the stunning performance of a sports car with a maximum efficiency. Fitted over the front axil is BMW’s new electric drive system and over the rear axil is BMW’s performance 3 cylinder engine which produces 220bhp, which is certainly impressive seeing as it is a hybrid plug-in car. With 0-60 mph acceleration in less than five seconds and with a combined fuel reading of 94mpg alongside a fuel consumption of under three litres per 60 miles driven, BMW are certainly enhancing their presence in the ‘green car’ market. The i8 can travel up to 20 miles on electric power without the need of the engine making it a practical 2+2 seater car.
Design
The architecture of the BMW i8 has been designed so that it enhances the cars sporty looking character and at the same time optimising the driving dynamics. The innovative electric drive system is connected to the engine by an ‘energy tunnel’. This tunnel houses the high voltage battery and is designed so that it gives the car a low centre of gravity.
